Foods We’ve Introduced

By skipping purees and heading right for finger foods, we’ve been able to expose Samuel to a lot of foods.  Before he was 9 months old, he tried over 100 different items. While BLW isn’t for everyone, I can’t recommend this approach enough.  Introducing babies to different textures rather than just purees is a fun and interesting way to begin solids.  It gives the baby a chance to experiment and play with his or her food rather than just be spoon fed.  Samuel has always been expected to feed himself although we do sometimes help him. This is a list of foods Samuel has tried:

I love that you kept a list. I wish I had done that, darn.

What did Samuel think of black olives? We tried them with Jack a few months ago and he clearly did not like them. They strike me as being a pretty mature taste.

Greek yogurt has become one of our go-to staples for breakfast in a hurry because it is so versatile. This morning Jack had Greek yogurt flavored with some pear juice and a little granola. He loved it.

Jenn, Samuel LOVES all kinds of olives. He puts them on his fingers. Like father like son.

We are following the same way of introducing foods to Kenny III and he loves it as well. He has only had about 35 different foods but he is only 7 months so it looks like I need to get on the ball and get him some more foods on his palate! I love this way of babies getting to know foods, even if both of my mothers ( in law and mom) are strongly opposed to the idea! Samuel looks wonderful!!

I did homemade purees with my daughter, which worked great at first, but once it became time to stop eating mushy food, she became a super picky eater. She went from eating lamb to eating nothing. We’re finally working her palate back up, but we’re thinking of trying BLW with number two. Any recommendations on good books for this? I’m a nervous nelly about choking and such, so any advice would be highly appreciated.

Beth, I highly recommend the book Baby-Led Weaning. I used that thing almost daily those first few months. It is an amazing book with tons of information about foods, statistics about choking, etc.

I was really worried about choking too, but Samuel is not a gagger. We never had any issues even when he shoved a whole cookie in his mouth once. The kid can swallow anything.

My pediatrician was less than thrilled with our decision to skip purees so you may want to prepare yourself for some medical pushback depending on your doctor. Once he saw Samuel was eating anything and everything {I take this list with me to each appointment} he began to at least pretend to be supportive.

If you ever have any questions let me know!!
