If you had asked me more than a year ago if I would ever use cloth diapers, I would have laughed at you uncontrollably. The idea of washing diapers and using a sprayer to clean them grossed me out beyond belief, and I was adamant that disposable diapers were fine.
About a year ago I found myself reading an article about cloth diapers, and I realized I could totally do it. They aren’t the bulky messes held together by clothes pins that we remember seeing in pictures or that our parents may have used. They are adorable, colorful, and much less bulky.
We plan to use Bum Genius 3.0 which are a one-size fits all cloth diaper that grows with the child.

Isn’t that the cutest thing ever?!? On Amazon.com, they run about $18.00 a piece. It seems expensive, but when you figure how much disposable diapers cost and how fast a baby can go through a pack…it really is much less!
Our main reason for cloth diapering is our continuous effort to be more sustainable as a family. We started out small: reusable grocery bags, buying local vegetables and fruits ever few weeks, walking more and driving less, etc. There is only so much we can do, because, well, we live in Atlanta and my 11 mile commute takes over an hour. However, for the past few years, we have really strived to leave a smaller footprint. Cloth diapers just fit right into our lifestyle. We also plan to make our own baby food {wait until I start posting those recipes}.
Our current plan is to use only disposables the first two weeks. Then for the next month or so we’ll use cloth diapers during the day and disposables at night. After about 6 weeks we will completely switch to cloth diapers.
I’m excited about it. I know there is going to be more laundry, but at the same time we’ll be producing a lot less waste. This is going to be an adventure!
{Oh, I swear I am going to post a recipe soon. Check back tomorrow for an eggplant parm recipe!}

That sounds much more cost effective and of course, better for the environment! I’m not sure if I could ever do it… but I was CD as a baby, and it was definitely the old school kind… complete with huge safety pins and a plastic/rubber cover and that’s what I’ve been carrying with me ever since! Of course, I would also use disposables should you put Samuel in daycare, the nursery at church and for traveling, but while you’re at home, it sounds like a good plan
looking forward to the eggplant parm. recipe it is one of my favorite dishes! and I am so glad you are going with bum genius! Great!!!
Don’t tell the Austin Green Police, but you’re a braver woman than me . . . I don’t think I can quite go there, but I’m looking forward to hearing all about your experience with these & am open to being converted!
I am wayyy late to this party because I actually just found your blog recently but my husband & I have a daughter who is 10 months old. We cloth diaper her. BumGenius is a spectacular CD brand. I just know you will love cloth diapering but I have one question – will you or your husband be a SAHM/D?? Not one single daycare in our area would even consider taking a child who is cloth diapered. Thankfully we don’t need a daycare because we have a live in nanny but I did call around before we made the nanny arrangement.
